#Excerpt: CHRISTMAS WITH A PRINCE by Noelle Adams

Christmas with a Prince
Noelle Adams
(Rothman Royals, #4)
Publication date: November 29th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance

I might be a former party girl and the over-indulged daughter of a multi-millionaire, but for the last few years I’ve been trying to be work hard and be good. I have enough right now to deal with–graduate school, my community literacy program, preparations for Christmas, and my dad’s constant attempts to find me a husband. I definitely don’t want to put up with Henry always hanging around, acting obnoxious and looking far too sexy.
My boss forced me to take on Henry as a literacy volunteer for the month of December. I don’t know anything about him except he’s from somewhere in Europe, and he’s spoiled, entitled, arrogant, stubborn… and incredibly hot. He’s the kind of guy I’ve been trying to stay away from. Plus he’s got a secret–something he’s hiding from me.
Now I can’t think of anything but him, and I’m stuck with him until Christmas is over.

EXCERPT:
I tried—very hard—not to feel an amused satisfaction at the look on Henry’s face as he saw the task in front of him.
“You think I have time to do it all?”
“Why wouldn’t you? Unless you’re planning to waste time while you’re here.” I remembered I was supposed to be nice to him now and tempered my tone with a smile. “I’m sure you’re not. You’ll get through them in no time.”
His eyes narrowed again in that suspicious way, as if he thought I might have questionable motives. “Why are you being nice to me today?”
I stiffened my shoulders. “Why wouldn’t I be nice?”
“You weren’t nice yesterday.”
This was unfortunately true, and I felt guilty about it. “I’m sorry about yesterday. I was… I didn’t know who you were, and I overreacted.”
If anything, his expression looked even more suspicious than it had before. “And you know who I am now?”
I frowned in confusion. “Of course I know who you are. Marcus told me you were authorized. You’re not some creep who came in off the street to get close to the kids.”
His face relaxed slightly but not all the way. “I see.”
I felt even more confused, rattled in a way that wasn’t normal for me. I didn’t like it. I gave him a little scowl. “Why are you being weird?”
“I’m not being weird.” He spoke the last word with care, as if he weren’t used to saying it.
“Yes, you are being weird. You seemed to like it yesterday when I was rude to you, and now you’re all stiff and off-putting because I’m trying to be nice.”
“I’m not off-putting.” He was relaxing even more now, that little smile on the corner of his mouth making those adorable creases.
I scowled even more. “Yes, you are. Do you have a problem with people being nice to you?”
“Only if they have ulterior motives.”
I gasped. “What possible motive could I have to be nice to you, other than being a decent person? Maybe you’re not used to being around decent people, but there are a few of us out there. If I want to be nice, I’ll be nice. I don’t have to have a motive for it.”
He was back to yesterday’s mood now. His eyes were laughing and appreciative both. As if I amused him and he also liked what he saw. “You’re not being very nice now,” he drawled.
“Well, I would if you’d let me. I find it very hard to be nice to obnoxious people.”
“And you think I’m obnoxious?”
He was teasing me. I knew it, and I also knew I shouldn’t play along. But I couldn’t seem to help it. “Of course you’re being obnoxious. I can’t be the only person who’s ever told you that.”
“You actually are. Almost everyone likes me.”
“That can’t possibly be true.”

Author Bio:
Noelle handwrote her first romance novel in a spiral-bound notebook when she was twelve, and she hasn’t stopped writing since. She has lived in eight different states and currently resides in Virginia, where she reads any book she can get her hands on and offers tribute to a very spoiled cocker spaniel.
She loves travel, art, history, and ice cream. After spending far too many years of her life in graduate school, she has decided to reorient her priorities and focus on writing contemporary romances.

#Excerpt: NECTAR OF THE GODS by Mary Bersen

Nectar of the Gods
Mary Bernsen
(Beyond the Gods #1)
Published by: CTP Pulse
Publication date: November 28th 2017
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Mythology, Romance

Ambrosia has spent her life preparing for the day she would avenge her mother’s death.

Desperate to find the mother she’s never met, Ambrosia convinces him to let her help. It’s a partnership of necessity and founded in deception, but Ambrosia is faced with an uncomfortable truth: this man is not the monster she has always envisioned him to be. Worse yet, she finds herself drawn to him…craving his touch. How can she reconcile these intense feelings for the man who shattered her life?
The first novel in the exciting new Beyond the Gods series, Nectar of the Gods is a fantasy romance steeped in Greek Mythology and full of passion that will leave you breathless.

EXCERPT:
For the first time in ages, I woke up alone. One might think a woman who had spent months sharing her bed with countless strangers would be relieved at the change. I was troubled to find that I was suffocated by the empty space next to me. I only let myself linger in the sheets for a moment before I needed to get away from the feeling of emptiness.
But the disheartening dark cloud chased me as I wrapped myself up in the sheets and paced the room. Catching a glimpse of myself in the full-length mirror hiding in the corner was sobering. My eyes were glassy and hazed. My spirit was missing from them and had been replaced by throbbing red lines left behind by my night of tearful realization.
My newfound weakness was disgusting and terrifying at once. I tried to think back, to find the point where I had first become so desperately lonely. There was a time when I’d been completely indifferent to any company. The love of a man was the last thing I’d wanted, and I had guarded myself fiercely against it. I had always preferred to be alone.
Well, I supposed that was not completely true. When I was a child, I’d longed for the company of others to play with. I dreamed of escaping the prison of lessons and studies. Instead of learning to sharpen swords, I wished with all of my heart for another person my age to play pirates with using pretend ones.
I mourned for the confident, complete woman I had lost so suddenly. When had I become this lost, dejected little girl all over again?
I pointed a critical stare at my reflection. From the day I’d met Perseus, I had seen the savage destruction love had left him with. It was the kind of pain a shield couldn’t protect against. Almost all the men who frequented the tavern wore the same shattered mask, and now, without a choice at all, I wore it, too.

#Review: A GOOD DAY TO MARRY A DUKE by Betina Krahn

4 of 5 stars

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Krahn. She is a talented author who has a knack for keeping the reader engaged to the last page. There are so many twists and turns in this book. After her disastrous debut in New York, Daisy Bumgarten bungled her New York debut badly and has been labeled a hoyden by the mistresses of the Four Hundred. Now she's trying to make amends to help her sisters be accepted by society. She's in England to find a titled husband, but like New York Society, she is not accepted in England either. A countess friend is helping her catch the eye of a duke, but who she catches is the duke's brother, Ashton Graham. Daisy is determined not to make any mistakes this time, but can she tame her traitorous heart and fall for the shy duke instead of his handsome brother?

I enjoyed this book and even the secondary characters took on a life of their own. I can't wait to read another Bumgarten sister's journey to married bliss.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. Although no fault of the author, the digital copy of the book lacked any formatting whatsoever and it made for a difficult read.

#Review: THE LADY AND MR. JONES by Alyssa Alexander

  5 of 5 stars

Elizabeth Frances Catherine Ashdown, Cat, Baroness Worthington, is frustrated that her father put her properties in trust at his death and she cannot access them until she's 35 or married. Her Uncle Wycomb is her guardian until she turns 21 and he's pushing her to marry his choice, but Cat wants to marry for love. What Cat doesn't know is Wycomb is one of the Crown's spies, but he's being investigated by another spy, Jones, at the orders of his superior. When Cat accidentally stumbles across Jones, she feels an instant connection with him. The more time she spends with him, the more she wants from him, but her uncle is using more than words to make Cat comply with his choice of husbands.

Ms. Alexander weaves a powerful story of want, desire, friendship and love. I loved Jones, a man so honorable, that only he cannot accept he could deserve to be with someone of Cat's station. He's a complicated character and the more I know out about him, the more I was rooting for him and Cat to end up together. The story is so much more than just about Cat and Jones. The story reunites previous characters and Cat's uncle Wycomb, a man who is being turned by greed. I love Ms. Alexander's writing and anxiously await the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

My spirit and I had failed her once, unable to prevent the chain of events and challenges she’d faced for sixteen cycles. Then, we finally found her – alive.
Within two rotations, she’d blossomed into a beautiful rose – such delicate petals, filled with purity and life. My mission was to guide her home, to where she truly belonged, as our Princess and saviour from the approaching darkness. She was more than just our Princess; I loved her with all my heart.
But…I failed. My once perfect rose, damaged by my failures. Would she ever forgive me, her star knight who’d sworn to protect her? Will I ever get the chance to tell her how much she means to me…to us?
Only the Starlight gods can tell. Please…bring my Firefly home.
~In Stars We Trust~
Tainted Rose is Book Two in the new, paranormal reverse harem series.

Recommended for 18+ audience, containing mature sexual content and strong language.

EXCERPT:
“Mako? Are you sleep walking again?” Ryder’s voice made me relax as I rubbed at my eyes.
“Ryder, why did you guys put a wall in the middle of the hall? It’s blocking me from food.” I whined.
“There’s our Firefly.” Marcus praised, chuckling.
“I can’t believe she actually called Kai a wall.” Daniel mused, his voice sounded thick with sleep.
“Kai?” I asked, opening my eyes just as the apparent wall, turned around, brilliant amber eyes locking on me. I gawked at the sight; my heart raced at the new shifter before me.
He was six feet for sure, maybe only an inch away from Marcus’ height. His wind-blown, coiffed hair was a stunning orange. Holy Starlight, a GINGER!! Like those hot guys in the fashion magazines.
He smiled, his perfectly straight, white teeth making an appearance, only adding to his forbidden sexiness. I wonder if Adam in the bible was this good looking. Maybe that’s why that Eve shifter went and took that apple.
“Princess, that’s not how it went in the bible, but I’m pleased with your admission of liking my ginger hair.” He approved; his calm voice enough to soothe any shifter.

#Excerpt: MARRYING AN ALIEN POP STAR by Kendra L Saunders

Marrying an Alien Pop Star
Kendra L. Saunders
(Alien Pop Star #3)
Published by: Crimson Tree Publishing
Publication date: November 20th 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance, Science Fiction

Daisy and her alien fiancé Griffin are planning a big wedding, but not just any big wedding – the biggest wedding the universe has ever seen. Daisy has been settling into life on Griffin’s home world of Kalesstria, running her own intergalactic music shop and planning for the big day. But things hit a road bump when there’s a problem with Griffin’s father – and it’s a little more complicated than the usual disapproving dad drama.
Looks like “save the date” is going to have to take a backseat to saving the universe…
Marrying an Alien Pop Star is the perfect laugh-out-loud romantic finale to the beloved Alien Pop Star series.

EXCERPT:
Somehow, every time I return to Earth, the awful smells that make up New York City seem even more welcome to my nose. A woman can only be without the olfactory cocktail of garbage, cheap coffee, morning cigarettes, and desperate hangovers for so long.
Finally, finally, here Griffin, Dev and I are, setting foot in the East Village with nothing but our clothes, one bag, and a bunch of semi-counterfeited money. Okay, not semi-counterfeited. Completely counterfeited. Griffin and Dev can create stacks of fake Earth currencies with almost no effort, which is disconcerting if I think about it for too long. I try not think about it at all, actually.
Griffin tips himself over a filthy looking garbage can and throws up for all he’s worth. I wander away a little and stare at taxis rolling by, willing my own stomach to calm down.
I’ve ‘traveled’ through space several times with Griffin, but it really doesn’t make it any easier, evidenced by my stomach’s gleeful attempt to empty everything inside it as soon as we land at our destination. Usually, I can bully my stomach into calming down before anything actually manages to come up, but the same can’t be said for Griffin. Somehow, he’s a million times worse at traveling through space than I am, despite his people’s advanced capabilities.
And see, I love him, and aspire to comfort him when he’s feeling sad or sick, but I know better than to get too close at a time like this. Besides, that’s exactly what Griffin’s best friend Dev is for.
Aforementioned best friend makes a beeline for Griffin, sidling up to him and patting him on the back. “It’s alright,” he says, in the special soothing voice he uses for Griffin in times of stomach disaster. “Just breathe through your nose, Griff. Pretend you’re on a horizon. Everything is still. Nothing moves. You’re weightless and blissful.”
Griffin raises his head and grumbles something about not feeling very blissful, and then lurches forward to vomit again.
Where Griffin is dark haired and pale and pointy, Dev’s handsomely golden in every respect. His skin always looks freshly sun-kissed, and his big gray eyes seem rested even when he hasn’t slept. He’s a calming force on everyone he comes into contact with, even his manic best friend. “Find your calm, Griff. You’re alright. You’re weightless and–”
“I’m not alright!” Griffin replies, flailing his hands around while still leaned fully over the bin.
Dev pats Griffin on the back. “I’m proud of you, Griff. You programmed our trip this time, and you didn’t kill any of us.”
His praise is justified, because this is actually kind of a big deal. Griffin is infamously terrible at travel, and has sent himself to a few dangerous places by accident over the years. Of course, reminding him of this fact never goes over well, and today is no exception. He raises his head again to pin Dev with a nasty look.
“I happen to be…” he starts to say, and then takes a long pause, “somewhat better at traveling than I used to be, thank you very much.” With that, he pukes again, and Dev bites his lower lip to keep from smiling.

#Excerpt: HINDER by Kristin Ping

Before Sentinels it was just earth Wielders. That was how powerful they were and Ethan was the lucky boy that was going to be part of that. He was going to become the next earth Wielder’s protector in every way possible.

Tears formed in Ethan’s eyes, but he refused to let them roll down his cheek. He tried so hard to live up to his element, to be strong and special.

Sad that the boy didn’t know how strong or special he already was. Maybe it was my fault as a father, as a parent.

I wanted to tell Natalie that she should stop making him feel so terrible. He was just exploring. But what good would that do? We would just end up fighting again. I was so tired of our fights. Shoulders slumped, I turned to go inside. That was when I heard the roar of engines.

The hair on my arms and neck stood straight. Adrenaline poured into my blood like jet fuel and my heartbeat skyrocketed as I turned to see Natalie running toward me across the yard, jerking little Ethan along by the hand.

“Get rid of them. Now.” She shouldered past me into the house.

No one had seen what Ethan had done, right? No, it wasn’t possible. Was it?

Three black Jeeps and a silver one careened into the driveway, spitting gravel behind their shiny black tires. I leaped off the steps but then composed myself. With great effort, I slowed to a sedate walk. I had to try to make this farmhouse seem like any other sleepy home on this continent—even though it was far from it.

Who are these people? What are they doing here?

They weren’t Necrocretors. Necrocretors didn’t use Jeeps or SUVs to make their entrances. Whoever they were, they were driving fast. Too fast.

As they pulled closer, the sun glinted off the tinted windows and blinded me. Then when they turned an angle, I saw it. It was the outline of a barrel.

I dove for the willow. Bullets shredded bark above my head. Splinters and sawdust flew everywhere.

My back was firmly against the tree, safe from the bullets, or so I hoped. Thank goodness he grew a fully mature tree, I marveled. Otherwise I’d be dead.

I recited words that hadn’t touched my tongue in years. I carried them in my skin on my tattoo, across my chest, close to my heart. A phrase scribbled in Latin that I’ve learned at a very young age: Estque vel me vel.

Its meaning was simple: It is either them or me.

If someone had to die, it wasn’t going to be me.

I took out the Zippo in my back pocket, closed my eyes, and used my diaphragmatic breathing exercises to calm my heart.

More gunshots sizzled overhead. Bits of the porch railing and the willow bar exploded. The air filled with the scent of sulfur and singed wood.

I took a deep breath.

Then I flicked the flint.

#Review: THE CHASE by Sara Portman

  4 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoy Ms. Portman's books and "The Chase" does not disappoint. Michael Rosevear was born on the wrong side of the blanket and even though he is a recognized son, he is not close to his father. He manages a distant estate in Yorkshire, but must make his way to London when he is summoned by his father who has found a bride for him. If Michael wants the estate to finally be his, he must do as he is told. Juliana Crawford is running away from an abusive father and begs a ride to London from Michael even though it is most inappropriate for a young woman to do so. The mystery surrounding the young woman is more than Michael can let go.

Ms. Portman has a flair for teasing out the backgrounds for both Michael and Juliana. The growing attraction between these two was well-done and their romance was believable. The twists and turns in the book kept me turning the pages to the end. I only have a slight criticism in that I would have liked more of Michael and Juliana in the epilogue instead of Beadwell women. That chapter seemed a bit out of place in the story, but it was still a satisfying ending to the story.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Interview with G D Penman, THE YEAR OF THE KNIFE

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

The Year of the Knife is a hardboiled detective novel set in an alternate America where magic exists and the British Empire never left. It follows Sully, an Agent of the Empire, as she tries to track down a body-hopping serial killer, manage her undead love-life and deal with her boss being turned into a parrot. And yes, it will absolutely be a series if enough people buy the first book.

Do you have a favorite character?
I have a soft spot for Raavi. Here is a person with no magic, in a world filled with monsters and mysteries, and his first response is to dive in face first and try to work out how everything works.

How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel?
The Year of the Knife is my second novel, with the first; Call Your Steel, coming out a short while ago. I have sold every novel that I have written so far, which is apparently some sort of miracle in publishing. Although I will be the first to admit that there was a long time between the book being finished and a publisher accepting it.

What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?
Meerkat Press are an independent publisher, but they have behaved like professionals from the first moment that I got in touch with them. I can’t lavish enough praise on Tricia and her amazing team.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?
Any future Sully books will be coming out through Meerkat Press, but I have a short story collection that I plan to self-publish in the near future, once all the rights have reverted to me.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
Once again, the team at Meerkat Press were absolutely fantastic. We had several brainstorming sessions and went back and forth on the design for a while until we settled on one that we all agreed on.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I can’t listen to anything with lyrics while I am writing or I just end up typing them out. My brain has a short circuit somewhere. If I need to block out the sounds of my wailing children then I have to rely on instrumental music.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
Nowadays, I outline everything, but that is because I ghostwrite for a living and I do not have the luxury of dithering off topic for a month at a time.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
The full list of retailers should be here: http://meerkatpress.com/books/the-year-of-the-knife/

The book has worldwide distribution, so in theory you can just pop into any book store and ask for it.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
I try to schedule time to handle the marketing work, just as I try to schedule writing time, but there aren’t enough hours in the day.

What’s next for you?
Hopefully dinner and a nap, but probably more writing.

Author Bio:
G D Penman writes Speculative Fiction. He lives in Scotland with his partner and children, some of whom are human. He is a firm believer in the axiom that any story is made better by dragons. His beard has won an award. If you have ever read a story with Kaiju and queer people, it was probably one of his. In those few precious moments that he isn’t parenting or writing he likes to watch cartoons, play video and tabletop games, read more books than are entirely feasible and continue his quest to eat the flesh of every living species.
